Robert Shanks, coachmaker of Lincoln Inn Fields teamed up with Robert How after returning from Calcutta where he had made his fortune with the Steuart coachmakers of Calcutta. Robert Shanks' first son carried on the coachmaking business as F&R Shanks. Robert's second son, James, partnered with Henrik Bolin to establish the Shanks and Bolin Magasin Anglais in Moscow.
